Abstract
The contribution examines two iconographies of great fortune in the painting dedicated to Saint Francis in the Counter-Reformation period, the Stigmatisation and The Angelic Zither, to investigate whether, in the same period, the two themes had similar fortune in the musical sphere.
In actual fact, only the episode of the Stigmata has been intoned many times, as in the case of the motet Io son ferito sì by the Modenese nun Sulpitia Cesis, author of both the poetic text and the music, while there are no compositions on the theme of the Angelic Concert to St. Francis, which is shown here through the masterpieces of Cavalier d’Arpino, Guido Reni, Guercino, Domenichino, Saraceni, Ribalta, Assereto and Trevisani. For the intonation of this musical episode presented by the Fonti Francescane, we will have to wait until the 20th century.
